Ibiza Town Historic And Gay

Ibiza Town is the capital of Ibiza Island, both in terms of culture and administration. The town has grown around a natural harbor, and in addition to the many historical buildings there are layers of restaurants, boutiques and bars. In the summer you will see people walking the streets in extremely fashionable clothing.

Ibiza Town is made up of the New Town to the west of the bay, the new harbor zone on the north side of the bay, and of course Dalt Vila, which is the walled historical area overlooking the harbor. It contains many historical buildings, including a Moorish cathedral and a Catalan cathedral.

If you are arriving from one of the charming Formentera properties then you will see Dalt Vila as you enter the harbor, and your first impression of Ibiza Town will be the harbor area known as La Marina. It sits in between the walls of Dalt Vila and the harbor waters. It is mainly made up of restaurants and bars. The corner of La Marina is known as Passeig Maritim. If you then stroll east you will go past the main harbor building of Estacio Maritima. During the summer one of the features of the area is club parades to promote the club events.

If you then venture further upwards to Dalt Vila one of the first historic building you will come across is Esglesia de Sant Elm, which was first built during the fifteenth century, but subsequently burned down by pirates on multiple occasions. It is a three storey structure, with a bell tower at the top. The last time it was destroyed was during the Spanish Civil War, after which it went through a rebuild to its current state.

A charming area nearby is the Placa de sa Constitucio, which has an organic vegetable market dating back as far as 1873. These days Es Mercat Vell does slightly less trade than the hub of the nineteenth century, but it has a lot of character.

As you continue forward you will come across the triangle of streets known as Sa Penya. This is the gay district and there is a high concentration of gypsies. No doubt there are also some gay gypsies. There are a number of dark, narrow streets and it can be a dangerous area at night.

The final stage of a short stroll through Dalt Vila takes you to Carrer de la Verge, which is an extension of the gay district. The street has plenty of small bars and fetish shops. It is an extremely hedonistic and wild street at night. It is not for the faint of heart.
